What is Title IX?
Title IX prohibits sex-based discrimination in education programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance. However, it also protects students at Colleges and Universities from sexual harassment or sexual violence. Those types of accusations usually arise in dating and intimate encounters between students.
How Does Title IX Protect Students?
If after an investigation, a valid claim for sexual harassment or sexual violence is found against a student, there can be a hearing under Title IX to determine disciplinary action by the College or University. That punishment can consist of:
- Probation for a length of years;
- Deferred Suspension from the institution, for a length of years;
- A Suspension from the institution, with time determined by the school;
- Expulsion from the institution.
Many students choose to hire an attorney to assist them with claims under Title IX. St. Aubin Law can help!
What Kind of Activity is Covered by Title IX?
Categories covered by Title IX include:
- Rape or sexual assault – when sexual activity occurs without consent, or when one party is too impaired to give valid consent
- Stalking or physical assault – when there is a pattern of unwanted contact and unwelcome harassment, or incidents involving domestic violence
- Sexual harassment – when there is unwanted sexual behavior, advances, or requests for favors either online or in person

Likewise if you are a college student accused of committing sexual harassment or sexual violence under Title IX, St. Aubin Law can help you gather evidence to help during the investigation, negotiate for favorable conditions using the informal resolution process, or even help you fight at a hearing.
How Expensive are Title IX Claims?
Attorneys that specialize in these claims are aware that college students are educated and tend to have resources from family, so they charge accordingly. It is normal that a quote for representation will be in the five digit dollar range. Just like with any legal service, it is best to speak with a few professionals to determine which one can provide you quality representation at a quality price.
